How Far Is Pinecrest B&B from Downtown Asheville? Your Complete Walkability Guide

When couples ask us “Do we need a car to stay at your B&B?”, our answer surprises them: You’ll want one for Biltmore and the Blue Ridge Parkway, but for exploring Asheville itself? Your feet are your best transportation.

After hosting thousands of guests at Pinecrest since 2016, we’ve learned that walkability is the #1 reason couples choose our Montford location. Here’s everything you need to know about walking from Pinecrest Bed & Breakfast to Asheville’s best attractions, restaurants, and hidden gems.

How Far Is Pinecrest from Downtown Asheville?

The short answer: Exactly 1 mile (15-20 minute walk on quiet, tree-lined residential streets).

The real answer: It’s the perfect distance. Close enough to walk to dozens of restaurants and galleries, but far enough from downtown’s hustle that you’ll sleep peacefully at night.

Our guests tell us: “We loved being able to walk to dinner and drinks, then returning to the quiet of Montford. Best of both worlds.”

The Walking Route from Pinecrest to Downtown

Ignore Google Maps for this one—we have a better route:

  1. Exit Pinecrest, walk down Soco Street
  2. Turn left at the stoplight on Montford Avenue
  3. Walk until Montford dead-ends (you’ll pass gorgeous Victorian homes)
  4. Continue left on Haywood Street
  5. You’re now in the heart of downtown shopping and dining

Why this route wins: Partially shaded, quiet residential streets, beautiful architecture to admire along the way. Far more pleasant than the direct route mapping apps suggest.

What Can You Walk to from Pinecrest? (Complete List)

Restaurants Within Walking Distance (0.1 – 0.5 miles)

Seared tuna salad with white wine at Nine Mile restaurant, one block from Pinecrest B&B in Asheville

Nine Mile (1 block away, 2-minute walk) Our hands-down favorite and voted “Best Restaurant” for 9 years running by Mountain Xpress. Caribbean-influenced dishes featuring chicken, fish, and vegetables with unique sauces you won’t find anywhere else. First-come, first-served only, so arrive early or prepare to wait—it’s that popular.

What we order: Ask us when you arrive—we have strong opinions about the menu!

Tall John’s (2 blocks, 5-minute walk)
Winner of “Best New Restaurant 2023,” this tavern features a small but perfectly executed menu using local seasonal ingredients. They take reservations for tables; bar seats are walk-in. Pro tip from innkeepers: Sit at the bar for their exceptional burger and fries if you don’t want to splurge on a full dinner.

All Day Darling (102 Montford Ave, 8-minute walk) The most casual of chef Jacob Sessom’s three Asheville restaurants. Open breakfast, lunch, and dinner with counter service and indoor/outdoor seating. You won’t even find a sign—just look for the address. Try the Green Dream blended drink for an energy boost.

Neighborhood Bar Within Walking Distance

Little Jumbo (15-minute walk) Nicknamed “Montford’s living room,” this is our favorite local spot for craft cocktails. They host jazz bands most Monday and Tuesday nights and continually update their drink menu, including half a dozen non-alcoholic choices. We especially appreciate their glossary explaining lesser-known ingredients.

Can You Walk on Trails from Pinecrest?

Yes! We have urban greenways literally in our backyard.

Reed Creek Greenway (Starts at Pinecrest)

Access: Turn right on Cumberland Circle, then right on Cauble Street. Pick up the trail at the bottom of the hill.

Head left on the greenway for a half-mile walk parallel to Reed Creek until you reach the UNC-Asheville campus. Cross Broadway to find the Asheville Botanical Gardens—free admission with over 500 native Appalachian species across half a mile of gravel trails.

  • Visitors Center hours: 10am-4pm daily
  • Garden access: Sunrise to sunset
  • Perfect for: A peaceful nature walk when you don’t have time for the Blue Ridge Parkway

Head right on the greenway toward downtown (currently ends at Elizabeth Street; long-range plans will eventually connect it fully to downtown).

Glenn’s Creek Greenway to Luella’s Bar-B-Que (1.3 miles)

Continue exploring by connecting to Glenn’s Creek Greenway at UNCA. This takes you safely on paved trails most of the way to Luella’s Bar-B-Que, one of our favorite scratch-made BBQ spots.

What to order: Besides the usual BBQ (ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken), try the deviled eggs, loaded baked potatoes, or the Cobb salad with your choice of protein. Counter-service and very casual.

What’s It Like to Walk in Montford?

Montford is a well-established, residential historic neighborhood that our guests consistently describe as peaceful and comfortable for walking.

The neighborhood character:

  • Approximately 300 acres bounded by I-240, US Route 19/23, and Broadway
  • Over 600 homes (including Pinecrest) listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977
  • Victorian neighborhood with homes built 1890-1920
  • Well-lit streets with an active neighborhood association
  • Residents who take pride in their community

What makes it walkable: You’ll see neighbors walking their dogs, families on evening strolls, and other visitors exploring the architecture. The streets are quiet, tree-lined, and primarily residential.

Our experience: In our 10+ years as innkeepers, the vast majority of our guests walk to and from downtown for dinner and drinks without hesitation. Many tell us they appreciate the neighborhood feel—it’s lived-in and authentic, not a tourist district.

Architecture buffs will spot Victorian, Queen Anne, and Arts & Crafts styles with elements of Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, and even some castle-inspired designs. The most influential architect was Richard Sharp Smith, who took over Biltmore Estate after Richard Morris Hunt died in 1895.

Take our self-guided tour: We’ve created a Montford Walking Tour highlighting easily overlooked architectural gems.

What About Walking to Other Asheville Attractions?

Riverside Cemetery (10-minute walk)

For a truly peaceful stroll, walk to this active 87-acre cemetery with over 13,000 graves. It’s the final resting place of O. Henry, Thomas Wolfe, and 46 other prominent citizens.

  • Over 3 miles of paved roads perfect for walking
  • Grab the Riverside Cemetery Walking Tour map at the entrance
  • Local tradition: Leave a penny or pen at O. Henry’s grave

Hurricane Helene update: To maintain the sensitivity of gravesites and ensure safety of both the public and work crews, some areas of the grounds may be off limits to community members while work takes place.
